Reception children continue to follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and the curriculum is carefully structured to enable them to learn through both play-based activities and more adult directed tasks.
Learning through play continues to be a vital part of daily life in Reception, enabling children to grow in confidence, whilst nurturing their interests and curiosities.
Children develop key social skills, learn to communicate about their learning, ask how and why questions, investigate and explore. They make full use of the garden as their 'outdoor' classroom.
During a typical week, the pupils enjoy sessions led by specialist teaching staff covering French, Drama, Music and PE. Cooking is also regularly incorporated into their lessons. Topics are flexible and tailored to the interests of the class. Reception enjoys excellent pupil to staff ratios. This enables us to tailor the curriculum to support individual needs and ensure good progress is made towards achieving the Early Learning Goals. If children require additional support this is identified and implemented promptly. We value parents as partners in their children's learning and encourage daily communication.
Classroom activities are enriched by participation in whole school events. These include weekly assemblies, Forest meetings, the annual Carol Service, and in the Summer term; Sports Day and the Summer Concert. Also, we welcome visits from parents who are able to offer specific knowledge or skill sets relating to our topics, for example parental talks about religious festivals such as Chinese New Year, Diwali and Eid or dentists and doctors to give simple health talks. Additionally, we organise visiting speakers which vary from police officers to The Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust.
